The name was
originally a pejorative; referring to the uptight conservative prefecture, but
since the re-writing of uniform regulations in 1988, Old School has become
emblematic of the Little Englander mentality that formed the more respectable end
of the founding mindset.
And most people
don’t look very far beyond that veneer of archetypal, middle-conservative
patriotism, flecked with the customary dottiness, and this is probably all to
the good; somewhere beneath the surface lurks truly Machiavellian intent and
ability, witnessed by the fact that as the oldest gang, with (generally) the
smallest membership, they have not been wiped out by a coalition of any two
others. Something is going on in there,
and the leaders of the other gangs don’t want to mess with it.
Old School
embodies a stoic and self-denying attitude to CP; ‘It’s supposed to hurt, and
you take it without complaint because you accept it. It is not a sexual turn on.’
They have some
common ground with
Traditional
uniform; gymslips for girls blazers for boys, smartness is a virtue.
